Puppy-Readiness Checklist: are you ready for a puppy?

A safe zone is set up A crate or pen with a comfy bed in a quiet corner — somewhere to nap and to be safely unsupervised.
The house is puppy-proofed Cables tidied, unsafe plants moved, medicines and cleaning products locked away, bins lidded.
Collar or harness, lead and ID tag are ready Sized for a puppy, with your contact details on the tag — plus whatever ID rules apply where you live.
Bowls and the right food are in the cupboard Ideally the same food your puppy is already eating, so day one holds no dietary surprises.
A few safe chew toys are waiting Chewing is coming either way; the only question is whether it lands on a toy or your furniture.
Accident supplies are stocked An enzymatic cleaner and plenty of paper towels. You will use them, and that's fine.

Time & routine

You've totalled the real monthly costs where you live Food, routine vet care, insurance, kit that gets outgrown or destroyed — actual local numbers, written down.
The surprise vet bill has a plan Pet insurance or a dedicated emergency fund — decided before it's needed, not during.
A local vet is chosen Registered, or at least shortlisted — with the first check-up in mind for arrival week.
Shelters and rescues near you got a real look Puppies and young dogs land in rescue all the time — checking there first costs nothing but a visit.
If it's a breeder, they pass the good-breeder test You can meet the mother and pups where they live, see health records through their vet — and they ask you questions too.
You're genuinely ready to walk away From pressure to send a deposit fast, meet-you-halfway handovers, couriered puppies, or litters that are somehow always available.
